Romney Tannehill
 |
|
Romney Tannehill was born in
Jefferson City, Missouri, in 1965 and grew up in the neighboring town of
Eldon. At age 8, he began square dancing with the Ozark Whirlers. At age
9, he was persuaded by caller Ron Parry to practice the singing call "You
Ring My Bell". Romney memorized the call and performed it at the club's
class. From then on, he pursued calling with single-minded dedication. At
age 14, he became a charter member of a clogging demonstration club and
soon after became the club caller. At age 15, he began booking dances
with many of the area clubs. His "big break" came in 1979 when Ozark
Whirler caller, Bill Owsley, had to return to air traffic control work
during the ATC strike and Romney became the club caller. He continued
calling for his club and at a nearby square dance resort while finishing
high school. By his late teens, Romney was conducting three weekly
workshops in St. Louis, over 120 miles from his home. At age 21 he moved
to St. Louis where he had the opportunity to travel extensively and
establish himself in his unique profession. In 1993, Romney took the major
step of relocating to Southern California, his home today. Although he
suffered heart attacks in 2003 and 2007 he hopes to bring the joy of
square dancing to people for many years to come.
